The Geology Section of the Peoria Academy of Science is dedicated to the study of all fields of the Earth Sciences, including geology, mineralogy, paleontology, conchology, and the lapidary arts. Educational programs relating to aspects of the earth sciences are presented at the monthly meetings, and members participate in field trips to collect minerals and fossils as well as hold workshops to conduct in-depth studies of specific topics.

In addition to member activities, the club operates outreach programs to improve geology education by hosting an annual rock, mineral, gem, and fossil show and by supporting geology education in area classrooms.

In addition to being part of the Peoria Academy of Science, the geology section is affiliated with the American Federation of Mineralology Societies, the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies, and the Geodeland Earth Science Clubs.

Regular Club Meetings

Regular club meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month (excluding September and December) at ICC’s Peoria Campus. Meetings are generally held in Maple Hall, Room 104. Meetings begin 6:30pm with social time, followed by an hour-long program, a short business meeting, and several door prize raffles.

Lapidary Workshop

The Geology Section hosts a weekly lapidary workshop at the Miller Center in Pekin, IL. For a fee of less than $5, anyone can learn to use the club’s equipment to cut and polish a stone! The shop is open on non-holiday Thursdays from 6p-9p. Please arrive on-time to reserve a station and please stay until the end to help clean up.

Gem, Mineral, & Fossil Show

The Geology Section is perhaps best known for its long-running Gem, Mineral, & Fossil Show, which is celebrating its 58th year in 2022. The annual show is an opportunity for the Greater Peoria area to visit with dealers and demonstrators related to rocks, minerals, gems, and fossils. The show also provides games for children and hands-on learning activities for all ages. The show is hosted on the 4th Saturday and Sunday in August at EastSide Centre in East Peoria.

We look forward to seeing you from 9am-5pm on Saturday, August 26 and 10am-5pm on Sunday, August 27, 2022.
